Ethical Codes for the Cryopreservation of Teeth in Dentistry
“A report on the guidelines for the cryopreservation of extracted teeth”
Japan Society for Reproductive Medicine, Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ethics Committee of Hiroshima University

Approval No. 32, Pharmaceutical and Food Safety Bureau, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare

April 2004
“The purpose of the transplantation of teeth as a dental intervention is to substitute decayed or damaged teeth that cannot be cured even by the most advanced dentistry with healthy teeth. The cryopreservation of teeth is performed to preserve healthy teeth from a donor for a long period in order to be used by the same person in the future”

To address questions that may arise as the cryopreservation of teeth becomes widespread, we have developed detailed guidelines.

1) Facilities for the cryopreservation of teeth
The site for the cryopreservation of teeth shall be a P2-level laboratory dedicated to experiments with human cells, and located within a medical facility approved by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

2) Explanations to and agreement from patients
Prior to the cryopreservation of teeth, a detailed explanation of the potential risks and problems to keep in mind in the transplantation of cryopreserved teeth shall be provided, using the manual, in oral and written forms to the client, and written consent shall be obtained. If the client is 20 years or older, the cryopreservation of teeth can be implemented with consent only from the person. If the client is a minor, the cryopreservation of teeth can be implemented with consent from both the person and his/her parent or guardian.

3) The period of cryopreservation
The maximum period of dental cryopreservation shall be defined. However, cryopreserved teeth will be discarded when the client has died or expressed his/her intention to do so even prior to the expiration of the preservation period.

4) Provision of cryopreserved teeth to others
Clients are not allowed to sell, purchase, or provide cryopreserved teeth free of charge.

5) The cell survival rate of cryopreserved teeth
Prior to the cryopreservation of teeth, an explanation in written form shall be provided to the public regarding the methods of dental cryopreservation and outcomes, the period of dental cryopreservation and disposal, and expected outcomes of the transplantation of cryopreserved teeth and side effects.

6) Outcomes of the transplantation of cryopreserved teeth
When transplantation therapy as a medical intervention may be indicated for a patient, an explanation of the outcomes of treatment for previous illnesses in written form shall be provided to the public.

7) Responsibility for preservation
If cryopreserved teeth become damaged and unusable due to natural disasters and other unexpected events such as an earthquake and fire (excluding war), the amount equivalent to the fee for the preservation of sperm that has been paid by the client shall be reimbursed.

8) Cost of cryopreservation
The cost of dental cryopreservation as mentioned in the preceding section shall be incurred by the client.
